DER WECHSELSCHATTENSPEICHER –  SHIFTING SHADOW STORAGE

The core idea of my artistic intervention is to create an analogue, white display that reacts to and displays on-site conditions using relatively minimal means. For that, I have specially developed a drawing system that is inscribed using CNC milling technology as deeply as 4mm directly into the back wall, as a wall relief.
Transferring my diagrammatic drawing onto the panels’ grid gives rise to a large-area and multilayered spatial plan whose coordinates span the terms time, climate, memory, and perception. This produces a dense network of information that still remains open to various interpretations, and a memory storehouse. The term “shadow storage” is borrowed from computer science and describes the use of “invisible storage” during a working process. In this regard, the relief, milled across the entire length of the wall surface, forms a type of spatial sensorium whose decipherability travels along the threshold of perception.
The constantly changing light relations (daylight/artificial light) created by the architectural situation (picture window) are key in determining the work’s legibility. Also, by changing their position within the space, beholders can access the work in ever new ways.

The Shifting Shadow Storage (2007)

Nikolaus Gansterer’s artistic approach grapples with the language of drawing and its translatability into spatial relations. Basic graphic structures are examined in their interactions with the surroundings in order to pry open the two-dimensional forms in three-dimensional dimensions. In his installation Changing Shadow Storage at the NÖ Forum, Gansterer works with the ephemeral qualities of the medium of drawing, which in its mainly non-color or eye-catching form, usually has to be observed up-close in order to enable precise interpretation. The installation condenses around this phenomenon: it consists of a drawing milled on the NÖ Forum’s inner façade and depending on the incidence of light and shade, allows beholders a holistic perception only by taking several positions, one after the other, gradually moving sideward. These differences in light and standing position lead to finely differentiated interpretations of the drawing, which mutates to a living matrix of fluctuating moments of reality.

What is essential for Gansterer’s approach is that construction of a network of information that is echoed in the elements assembled in the grid within the drawing. The linguistic and conceptual connection to a changer turntable ultimately makes it possible with Gansterer’s Shifting Shadow Storage to perceive different spheres of space and time consecutively and test out the possibilities of perception, bit by bit, similar to listening to a number of different records. Thus arises the connection to music, essential for Gansterer, which plays an equally important role in the artist’s work, promoting a multi-sensory, that is, visual and auditory artistic awareness. Thus, in the temporal relativity required for its experience, the shadow-light space becomes a sound-filled resonant space, which makes it necessary to store memory, and transfer it to a personal legibility. Nikolaus Gansterers künstlerischer Ansatz setzt sich mit der Sprache der Zeichnung und ihrer Übersetzbarkeit in räumliche Verhältnisse auseinander. Grafische Grundstrukturen werden in ihrer Wechselwirkung mit dem Umraum untersucht, um die zweidimensionalen Formen in einer dreidimensionalen Dimension aufzubrechen. In seiner Installation Wechselschattenspeicher im NÖ Forum beschäftigt sich Gansterer mit den ephemeren Qualitäten des Mediums Zeichnung, das in seiner meist nicht-farbigen bzw. ins Auge stechenden Erscheinungsform stets aus der Nähe betrachtet werden muss um eine genauere Lesart zu ermöglichen. Um dieses Phänomen herum verdichtet sich die Installation, die aus einer gefrästen Zeichnung an der Innenfassade des NÖ-Forums besteht und je nach Licht- und Schatteneinfall den BetrachterInnen eine holistische Wahrnehmung nur aus mehreren, zeitlich nacheinander eingenommenen Positionen ermöglicht. Diese Unterschiedlichkeit der Licht und Standortposition führt in Folge zu differenzierten Lesarten der Zeichnung, die zu einer lebendigen Matrix wechselnder Momente der Realität mutiert.

Was für Gansterers Arbeitsansatz als wesentlich gilt, ist jene Konstruktion eines Netzwerkes an Information, das sich etwa in den zusammengefügten Elementen der Rasterung innerhalb der Zeichnung wieder findet. Der sprachliche und gedankliche Konnex zu einem Wechselplattenspieler ermöglicht es schließlich, bei Gansterers Wechselschattenspeicher unterschiedliche Sphären von Raum und Zeit hintereinander wahrzunehmen und Stück für Stück die Möglichkeiten der Wahrnehmung auszutesten, wie es auch beim Hören mehrer Platten der Fall ist. Dadurch entsteht jene für Gansterer wesentliche Verbindung zur Musik, die im Werk des Künstlers eine ebenso wichtige Rolle spielt und für eine multisensorische, d.h. visuelle und auditive Kunstwahrnehmung plädiert. Der Schatten-Lichtraum wird in der für seine Erfahrung notwendigen zeitlichen Bedingtheit daher zu einem klanglichen Resonanzraum, der es erforderlich macht, Erinnerung zu speichern und in eine individuelle Lesbarkeit zu übertragen.
